The UK is home to some of the biggest and most prestigious law firms in the world.

In 2023, UK law firms collectively generated £47.1 billion in revenue, 75% of which came from the top 100 firms, which predominantly focus on corporate and commercial law, advising clients including companies, financial institutions and governments on a broad range of legal issues across many different practice areas.

The table below lists the top 25 biggest law firms in the UK by revenue.

Profit per equity partner (PEP) is also shown for each firm. This is a widely used measure in the legal industry which divides a firm’s distributable annual profits by the number of equity partners at the firm. The higher a firm’s PEP, the more prestigious the firm is generally considered to be.

When it comes to prestige more generally, we also have a separate ranking of the UK's most prestigious law firms.

The ranking criteria is set out below the table.

Criteria

All of the firms listed are either headquartered in the UK, or otherwise were formed by the merger of a UK-headquartered firm with a foreign firm but which continues to have a significant presence in the UK (they may be co-headquartered in different countries like Hogan Lovells, for example, with its HQ in London and Washington).

Revenue figures are for the financial year ending in 2024, except for Hogan Lovells where its FY2023 figures are given.

Slaughter and May remains a general partnership and does not publish firm-wide accounts. Its revenue figure is estimated.

Fieldfisher shortened its accounting period in 2023/24. The number has been extrapolated from the 11-month figure disclosed.

Eversheds figures are for the firm's UK arm only.

*Indicates that a firm’s revenues are reported in USD in which case the figure has been converted into GBP.

**Indicates that a firm’s revenues are reported in EUR in which case the figure has been converted into GBP.

***Indicates an estimated figure.

Where we get our information from

We gather firms' financial data from a range of sources, including accounts filings at Companies House (almost all law firms are Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) and must publicly file their annual accounts), law firm websites and press releases, and from other reputable sources online.

We regularly update our database but if you spot anything that is incorrect or out of date, please let us know by emailing us at newsletter@nonbillable.co.uk.
